Fresno is a famous heirloom hot pepper! It was developed and released by Clarence Brown Hamlin in 1952 and is names after Fresno California, where it is still widely cultivated. This pepper grows up to 3 inches long, is red when ripe, and is similar to the jalapeno pepper in a appearance and heat, though it can actually be slightly hotter when fully ripe, sometimes getting up to 10,000 Scoville Heating Units. There are some subtle differences in flavor and texture, having a slightly fruitier taste when ripe and somewhat thinner walls. This is a dependable productive variety that is a staple with pepper growers everywhere!
